本次展览将展出大都会艺术博物馆收藏的约70件荷兰黄金时代绘画作品，带领参观者探索17世纪的荷兰文化，包括宗教、商业、家庭生活等主题，呈现艺术史上这一非凡的篇章。
「绘画礼赞」（in praise of painting）是荷兰艺术家 philips angel ii 所著的一本艺术理论书作，该书出版于1642年，讨论了绘画艺术的历史、价值、技法等，还对部分同时代画作进行了点评——包括伦勃朗的《参孙的婚礼》（the wedding of samson）。angel 强调绘画应当真实而自然，避免僵硬失真，《绘画礼赞》至今依然是17世纪荷兰艺术理论研究的重要资料。

gerard de lairesse（1641-1711）是一位画家、艺术理论家，与伦勃朗是好友，画风优雅华丽，接近法国巴洛克式绘画。1690年左右他因先天性梅毒而失明，之后专注于艺术理论研究，他的理论书作对18世纪的画家产生了广泛影响。
